The Rural Connectivity Group (RCG) and the West Coast Regional Council are excited that new telecommunications infrastructure will soon be built near Lake Wahapo, bringing much needed mobile phone and data services to the area.

The West Coast was identified as a priority area under the Government’s Mobile Black Spot programme, and with the help of the West Coast Regional Council, a local farmer, and the ratepayers of the Waitangi-taona River Special Rating Area, The RCG quickly found the ideal location and signed the lease for the new cell site. The RCG overcame many location restraints to find the ideal site; rugged mountainous terrain and river flat areas prone to flooding. The new tower location will ensure maximum highway coverage is reached – while ensuring it won’t interrupt farming activities on the land.
